The country has a population of 2 million and a land area around 20,000 sq kilometres or roughly the same size as Wales or Israel. Slovenia has 32 kilometres of coastline along the Adriatic Sea.

Slovenia largely avoided the early 1990s Balkan war following the breakup of Yugoslavia.
