Female elephants (cows) reach sexual maturity at around 9-12 years of age and can reproduce until ages 55-60. Typically, females give birth at intervals of about every 5 years after a gestation period of about 22 months. At birth, calves weigh around 90-115 kg (200-250 pounds) and gain an average of 1 kg (2-2.5 pounds) a day. Baby elephants are raised by the whole family group.
