Macaws gather by the hundreds at clay licks in the Amazon rainforest. The clay provides macaws with minerals -- especially sodium -- while helping to counter dietary toxins ingested during the comsuption of immature seeds,w hich are often chemically protected by midly toxic compounds. Further, the clay lick offers social opportunities akin to a singles bar for macaws.
