Cusco was the capital of the Inca (Inka) Empire which reached its peak in the 15th century. The city is well organized and is laid out in the shape of a puma's body.
Today the population of Cusco is around 325,000 people. It is the jump-off point for many adventure trips in Peru including Machu Picchu and the southeastern Amazon rainforest of Manu and the Tambopata.
