Cicadas go through a life cycle that usually lasts between two to five years. Most of their life is spent in nymph form underground. The nymphs feed on root juices until it is time for them to emerge. They dig an exit tunnel to the surface, molt (shed their skin), and emerge as an adult. The abandonded skins of cicadas can often be found left on trees, still clinging to the bark. Adult cicadas have a very short lifespan. Brown cicada. From dusk until dawn, the forest buzzes with the continuous drone of cicadas calling to attract mates.
